Day 10 Saturday September 12th Graig Wen and Mawddach Estuary
After a bit of indecision as to what to do on which day, and having checked the mountain weather forecast for Snowdonia, we decide to cycle the Mawddach (the “dd” pronounced like “th”) Estuary today and leave Cadair Idris for another day. We set off along and down the road through Arthog and join the Estuary Trail and head eastwards towards Dolgellau. Stunningly beautiful sandy estuary with little development along it. We cycle the 9 miles up to Dolgellau where we find a characterful coffee shop which used to be an old ironmongers. Coffee cake and flat white. Slate grey town. Then back into a stiff westerly headwind and over the railway sleeper footbridge and cycle way which crosses the river Bar/Maw to the town of Barmouth where we have fish and chips (2 days in a row!)from the Mermaid. We cycle with them to the sea front and eat them looking at the pounding foamy surf. We buy some dressed crab to eat tonight (instead of an M&S tin of steak and kidney! - we’ll save that for another (wintry) night.
Then back over the bridge to make our way to Graig Wen. The view From the camp site is superb today in full sun. Tea outside. Listening to Richard Burton reading Under Milk Wood on my I-phone which is probably the best way to appreciate it. We have been very lucky to see the Mawddach in its full glory today.
