Day 12 Graig wen to the LLyn Peninsula

Today’s the day we have planned to climb up Cadair Idris. Early start, heavy dew, hazy sun. Excellent weather  forecast. Autumnal nip in the air. We’re off around 8 and are walking at 8:45 up the Minfford route. Sunny and hot and we are soon sweating.Through broad leafed woodland to start with and up steps described as “savage” in the guide book. Then we leave the woods and continuing ever up for 2 hours (800 metres of ascent) we reach the top of Pen y Gadair  with superb views of the lake below and Barmouth and the Mawddach estuary in the far distance. Snowdon clearly visible to the north east. We see roche mountonee glaciated boulders. A knee busting descent rewarded with freshly brewed coffee in Ludwig at the end of 4.5 hours pretty arduous walking. Superb views and scenery. It’s been 24 degrees C today!

We then drive northwards on the A470. passing through the Croed y Brenin forest park, reminiscent of driving in Canada! We reach the Llyn  peninsula shortly before Caernarfon and find our camp site on the North side . We have a superb pitch a few metres from the sea in the Beach Field. We are still overheated from our walk so have a dip in the sea. Anglesey and Holy Island visible ahead. Very warm evening with welcome sea breeze. Candle lit supper (M&S tinned curry!) washed down with plenty of wine. A fabulous day!
