Day 6 at Caerfai

Sea mist/foggy greyness as we wake up, and so no views across to Skomer or Martin’s Haven. We head off to St Davids (like St Albans, with no apostrophe!) and visit the cathedral, with its impressive sloping floor, apparently 14 foot from east to west, and then walk around the “city”, more of a village really. Coffee and carrot cake stop. Back to Ludwig for meagre lunch and then we head off along the coastal path westwards towards St Justinian’s (this time with an apostrophe). We pass the ruins of St Non’s chapel and then Porth Clais, a minute little harbour.

Soon we see Ramsey island across the sound, and then in a little bay we see female seals with their white pups beached on the rocky inlet. We meet a lady who seems to know a lot about seals and she tells us that they have an 11 month gestation period followed by mating another month later. The males remain out at sea. This is the peak birthing time of year so we are in luck! We then reach Ramsey Sound with its strange currents and see porpoises cresting the water, their fins clearly visible. Further along the cliff path we look down at a male seal who pops up and has a good luck at us.

At St Justinian’s we head inland along the road to get back to St Davids and then back to Caerfai. The mist seems to be clearing so we have some better views with our pre-prandial drink.
