 Some rain overnight but we are cosy in Ludwig! The cargo ships moored across from us in Bride’s Bay leave early, presumably on their way to Milford Haven, round the corner. Sunny start to the day and forecast promising so we get a taxi (advertised in the toilets as Jones’s coastal taxis) east along the bay to Broad Haven. The driver is in fact from the Wirral. He tells us that the shearwaters are on their way now to Argentina, and that the white  island we can see in the distance is coloured with their poo! From Broad Haven the whole sweep of the bay is visible from Skomer Island to Ramsey island beyond the St David’s peninsula. We walk all of 0.6 miles to Little Haven (“But Big Sign”) for a lovely coffee sitting out in the sun by the harbour. Then onwards along the coast path, always looking for the acorns, through some woodland, with clusters of red berries on the hawthorns and plenty of blackberries. 

We stop for lunch at St Bride’s  harbour and then make our way to Musslewick Sands. Superb for body surfing and only accessible at low tide (which it is!). Invigorating time in the water before de-sanding our feet and re-booting. We get back to West Hook for tea in the sun, hardly any wind now and with the sun dipping below the lookout it’s time for some wine!...

 Final dive into the sea, even before the sun has totally risen above the mountain. We say farewell to Maria and then cycle out of the town. Up for a while and then along. Lots of cypress trees standing thinly to attention.  Down to Stoupa with its sandy beach then we pick up the cycle track that runs along the coast to Agios St. Nicholas.  A Pretty fishing village. Then up and up and up we go. Near the top we meet some Dutch cyclists who are takiny5 weeks to circumnavigate the Peloponnese. They complain about the heat and gradients. We head off into the back of beyond at Oytlio running low on water and every village is deserted. 40 miles later we reach the beach at Mavroumani where we rehydrate with Mythos and have some lunch. It’s very windy. We spend some time on the beach then reach Gytheo in the early evening. Nice balcony overlooking the bay.

Day 11 - Sunday 13 September: Cregennan Lakes and Arthog waterfalls

 The forecast seems very accurate so we are not surprised to wake up to low cloud, mist and light mizzle. It was a good plan not be doing Cadair Idris today. Unusually for us we relax in the van reading books until mid morning when it begins to brighten and then head off on foot down to the estuary. We follow a route recommended by the campsite owner and after walking along the estuary trail for a while we head uphill following the Arthog river which drops steeply forming impressive waterfalls through the ancient broadleaved woodland. We cross a beautiful clapper bridge onto open moorland and then reach the Cregennan Lakes at 800 feet. It is warm now but windy and the mountain tops are still enshrouded in mist and we realise we will never see the summit of Cadair Idris above us. A meagre picnic, as Simon like to call it, sheltering by an old stone wall. Day 19, Monday 21 September: to the Brecon Beacons

 We wake to blue skies and no wind - probably the best day yet and without the crowds and the festival atmosphere the campsite almost feels idyllic. The situation certainly is as we breakfast beneath the shadow of Tryfan. We are packed and on the road by 9.30 and drive in convoy through stunning mountain scenery along the A470 to Dolgellau. We park easily and revisit TH Roberts cafe in the old iron mongers where Ellie and Simon have bacon + egg baps and I have the most delicious piece of carrot cake (which Simon insists is enormous.... meagre in my opinion!) We find a catering van in the car park selling authentic Indian cuisine and we decide to buy our supper. Back on the scenic winding road through Wales to the Brecon Beacons where we circle a roundabout several times due to road closures but eventually arrive safely at Cwmdu campsite just outside Crickhowell.
